The History of Plumbing: From Ancient Times to Modern Day

Modern plumbing is one of humanity’s most significant innovations. Without it, you would have difficulty getting access to clean water, disposing of waste hygienically, or carrying out everyday tasks like washing dishes or doing laundry.

But plumbing is not a recent invention. The history of plumbing dates back to ancient times. At A-1 Total Service Plumbing, our plumbers offer a full range of services, including whole house repiping, to keep your plumbing system in optimal condition.

Origination of Plumbing

When people congregated in cities, leaders recognized the need to bring clean and eliminate dirty water. Public baths, wells, and crop irrigation systems arose in ancient China, India, Greece, Rome, and Persia. Wealthy homeowners often set up repipe services to connect their properties to municipal pipes.

Early Pipe Materials

The earliest pipes consisted of baked clay. Egyptians first used copper pipes in tombs for their royalty. Many homes today contain copper pipes, and one of the services we provide is copper PEX repiping to replace worn-out materials.

Initial Household Plumbing

In the 1600s and 1700s, only royalty had access to copper repiping and indoor plumbing fixtures, such as toilets. Around the same time, Boston set up the first municipal water system in the colonies that became the United States of America. The first flush toilet was invented in 1739, and a modified version received a patent in 1775.

Modern Plumbing

In the 1800s, cities started building extensive wastewater systems to handle the waste disposal needs of tens of thousands of people. This reduced cholera, typhoid, and dysentery. Cities also built water mains to help with firefighting and minimize contaminated water ingestion. Most homes didn’t get pipes until the 1900s. A repipe specialist from our team can help you switch out your old lines for more modern materials.
