Salt-based Water Softeners

Salt-based water softeners use an ion exchange process. For these types of softeners, the calcium and magnesium ions, which cause hardness, are exchanged for sodium (or potassium) ions. The system regenerates by flushing out the calcium and magnesium and recharges itself with more sodium or potassium from a separate salt/brine tank.

This water softener works in tandem with the salt/brine tank to remove hard water from your potable water and your sewage water.

On average, a well-maintained salt or potassium based water softener can have a lifespan of 10-15 years.

Saltless Water Softeners

Unlike salt-based water softeners that exchange ions to remove hard water. Saltless water softeners take a different approach by conditioning the water so that the calcium and magnesium in you pipe system does not create deposits of scale that stick to your pipes and leave obstructions.

This also removes the need for a separate salt/brine tank which requires maintenance/refills approximately every 2 months.

Filters for saltless water softeners generally need to be replaced every 6 months or so.

Make sure your system is well-maintained and your water softener can last up to 20 years!

Salt Vs. Saltless: What's the Difference?

The two different types of water softeners available on the market play a key role in ensuring that your house’s hard water doesn’t depreciate your health, clothes, and pipe system.

Water comes at different levels of hardness. For the most part, if your household is looking for an easy, eco-friendly, low-maintenance solution, go with a saltless water softener. It will alter the mineral structure of of calcium and magnesium to perform the primary benefit of preserving your pipe system’s health and preventing buildup of scale.

However, salt based systems and currently still being used around the world out of necessity. It’s important to go with a salt-based water softener when the water entering and exiting your house has an exceptionally large quantity of hard minerals.

When you go with a salt-based system, you not only preserve your pipe health, but you gain a lot of health and cleansing benefits that come from this established and trusted solution.

For example, soap becomes easier to lather on your skin and hair. Bathrooms faucets, showerheads, and tubs will have no soap scum, but the cost comes at a higher frequency of maintenance time in cost in the form of salt or potassium replacements approximately every 2 months.
